Meditation can trigger brain changes in just seven days
New research suggests that as little as seven days of intensive mindfulness meditation can trigger measurable structural and functional changes in the brain. Studies indicate that short-term interventions can influence neuroplasticity, involving a reduction in amygdala activity and an increase in gray matter concentration within the hippocampus.
A study conducted by researchers at the University of California San Diego, published in Communications Biology, found that a seven-day residential program produced changes across multiple biological systems. These changes extended beyond the brain to include blood chemistry, immune signaling, metabolism, and the body's natural pain control systems.
Senior study author Hemal H. Patel noted, "What's striking is that combining multiple mind-body practices into a single retreat produced changes across so many biological systems that we could measure directly in the brain and blood." The findings suggest that brief, structured mindfulness sessions may serve as a viable non-pharmacological tool for stress regulation and clinical mental health support.
