Mediterranean Climate Summit addresses regional crisis in Muğla

The Mediterranean Climate Summit, organized by Muğla Metropolitan Municipality in collaboration with ICLEI Europe, recently concluded in Muğla, Turkey. The event brought together local government representatives, international organizations, and experts from three continents to address the climate crisis facing the Mediterranean region.

Key discussions focused on the role of local governments in climate action, urban resilience, and the necessity of securing climate finance. Participants emphasized that local authorities must be active partners in policy creation rather than just implementers. Specific challenges addressed included water management, extreme heat, droughts, floods, forest fires, and biodiversity loss.

In preparation for COP31, the summit included a policy dialogue titled ‘Towards COP31: Local Climate Action.’ This session explored themes such as climate justice, inclusive transformation, and the localization of climate finance. Representatives from the United Nations, UCLG MEWA, and various European metropolitan areas participated, advocating for strengthened regional cooperation and the translation of global climate goals into measurable local actions.
