Cruise industry sees environmental protests and luxury expansion

The cruise industry is seeing significant shifts in both luxury offerings and environmental scrutiny. In Vigo, Spain, the Plataforma fronte á masificación turística Vigo–O Morrazo has denounced the environmental impact of three large cruise ships arriving simultaneously, carrying approximately 14,000 passengers. The group expressed concerns regarding sulfur and nitrogen oxide emissions, comparing the pollution to that of 18 million cars.

In the Mediterranean, premium cruise lines are expanding their presence. Celestyal has launched a winter campaign featuring sailings across Greece, Turkey, Cyprus, and Egypt, with new itineraries for the 2027/28 season. Additionally, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings is driving a luxury renewal in the region, with new vessels like Oceania Sonata and Seven Seas Prestige scheduled to debut in the Mediterranean between 2026 and 2027.

On the expedition front, Swan Hellenic has announced luxury voyages for 2027. Using the SH Minerva, the company aims to reach remote Asia-Pacific destinations, such as Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands, that are inaccessible to larger vessels due to shallow reefs and limited infrastructure.
