Mediterranean diet linked to heart, brain and mental health benefits

Recent clinical research shows that the Mediterranean diet – high in fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, whole grains, olive oil, fish and moderate poultry – supports cardiovascular health by improving endothelial function and reducing inflammation, which helps prevent atherosclerosis. The same dietary pattern is associated with better cerebral blood flow and lower neuro‑inflammation, correlating with reduced risk of cognitive decline.

A longitudinal study of more than 3,000 English adults aged 50‑90 during the COVID‑19 pandemic found that participants who closely followed the Mediterranean diet reported higher psychological well‑being, greater life satisfaction and stronger resilience compared with those who did not. The mental‑health advantage persisted after adjusting for income, education, physical activity and other health factors, suggesting that specific nutrients such as omega‑3 fatty acids and polyphenols play a key role.
