Mediterranean diet linked to weight loss and psychological well-being

Recent research highlights the multifaceted benefits of the Mediterranean diet, focusing on both physical weight management and psychological well-being.

A two-year study published in JAMA Network Open compared a Mediterranean-style diet adapted for the Southern U.S. against a calorie-focused weight loss program. While both groups achieved similar weight loss, the Mediterranean group showed greater improvements in overall diet quality and higher rates of program recommendation. The study followed 360 individuals in North Carolina with a BMI of 30 or greater.

Separately, research from University College London and the Barcelona Institute for Global Health, published in BMJ Open, linked the Mediterranean diet to enhanced psychological well-being in adults aged 50 to 90. Analyzing data from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing, researchers found that adherence to a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes, fish, and olive oil was associated with higher levels of autonomy, pleasure, and purpose. The study also suggested the diet may have a protective effect against the negative emotional impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
