Mediterranean diet promoted for health benefits with new protein guidance and supporting research

The University of Florida Extension released a practical guide urging consumers to adopt Mediterranean‑style protein choices. It recommends increasing plant‑based proteins such as beans, lentils, nuts and seeds; eating lean fish two to three times weekly; selecting skin‑less poultry and lean cuts of red meat; opting for low‑fat dairy; and limiting processed meats. The guide frames these swaps as ways to keep saturated fat below 10 % of daily calories and support cardiovascular health.

A separate French‑language analysis explains why the Mediterranean diet consistently ranks top for longevity and disease prevention. Researchers highlight the diet’s high fiber, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, and polyphenol‑rich foods. These components are linked to favorable lipid profiles, reduced inflammation, and activation of cellular pathways such as NRF2, SIRT1 and AMPK. Emerging studies also explore potential effects on cellular aging markers, though most evidence remains observational. Large epidemiological reviews associate adherence to the diet with lower risk of chronic diseases and longer lifespan.
