Mediterranean faces escalating climate‑driven fire crisis
A new Arte documentary by Greek journalist Yorgos Avgeropoulos warns that the Mediterranean Sea is being hit hard by climate‑related disasters, including severe droughts, megafires, floods, cyclones and forced displacement. The report notes that temperatures in Mediterranean countries are rising about 20 % faster than the global average, and attributes the worsening situation to the irresponsibility of bordering states.
In Greece, authorities are reshaping fire‑prevention tactics after a series of extreme wildfires in the Attica region. New measures include establishing firebreak zones, deploying drones and using satellite monitoring to detect sparks early. Veteran firefighter Nikolaos Lavranos, who has lost colleagues in recent blazes, recalled the deaths of two French firefighters in Gironde, underscoring the shared European burden of increasingly intense fires.
