Mediterranean ferry capsizes north of Cyprus with hundreds on board

International rescue operations are underway in the eastern Mediterranean following the sudden capsizing of a commercial ferry. The vessel, which was carrying approximately 300 people, sank in open waters north of Cyprus.

Civil protection agencies from neighboring coastal states are coordinating a joint deployment of patrol boats and aircraft to locate numerous missing persons who fell overboard during the night. Search efforts are currently facing difficulties due to adverse weather conditions affecting tactical divers.

Medical facilities along the northern coast are on high alert to treat survivors for severe hypothermia, extreme fatigue, and traumatic injuries. Port authorities have established temporary reception centers providing psychological assistance and basic supplies for those rescued by merchant vessels. Technical experts have launched an investigation to determine if structural failures or overloading caused the loss of stability.
