Mediterranean fishing fleets face fuel costs and quota cuts

Mediterranean fishing fleets face significant economic pressure due to rising fuel costs and upcoming regulatory decisions. In the Balearic Islands, fishermen report that doubling diesel prices have made many fishing trips unprofitable, forcing vessels to remain moored or ration fishing days to minimize expenses.

Simultaneously, the European Council of Fisheries is scheduled to meet on December 14 and 15 to decide on fishing quotas for 2027. Fleet owners and crews fear further reductions in fishing days, similar to those seen since the implementation of the Western Mediterranean Multiannual Fisheries Management Plan in 2020.

In Spain, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food is navigating these negotiations during a transition period. Industry groups, including the Spanish Confederation of Fisheries (CEPESCA) and the National Federation of Fishermen's Guilds (FNCP), continue to advocate for regulatory reforms to protect the sector's viability.
