Mediterranean lionfish expansion triggers Italy and Malta cooperation

The expansion of the lionfish (Pterois miles) in the Mediterranean Sea has become a significant concern for scientists, environmental authorities, and fishing communities. Originally from the Indo-Pacific, this invasive predator poses a threat to marine ecosystems due to its efficient hunting capabilities and venomous spines.

In response, Italy has increased surveillance of the lionfish and other tropical invasive species. Italy and Malta are engaged in cross-border cooperation projects focused on monitoring, control, and scientific research to limit the spread of non-native organisms. While there is no evidence of physical containment nets being used in the Adriatic Sea, the collaborative efforts include early warning protocols and the involvement of citizens and fishermen to manage the ecological and economic risks to the fishing industry.
