Mediterranean marine heatwaves linked to human emissions

The World Weather Attribution (WWA) research network has concluded that recent extreme heat in the Mediterranean and the Bay of Biscay was virtually impossible without human-induced greenhouse gas emissions. During July, parts of the Mediterranean experienced unprecedented temperatures, with some areas recording sea surface temperatures more than 6 degrees Celsius above normal.

In August, a buoy near Mallorca recorded a record-breaking temperature of 33 degrees Celsius. Researchers attribute this extreme heat to a heat dome effect, where high-pressure systems over western and central Europe trap warm air and solar radiation, creating a self-reinforcing warming cycle.

While some species, such as octopus, are migrating north, marine ecologists warn of catastrophic consequences for other organisms. Marine ecologist John Bruno noted that even minimal increases in temperature can push many marine species past their survival thresholds. Models suggest that these types of heatwaves, which were once rare, may now recur every three years due to climate change.
