Mediterranean monk seal sighted near Zadar, Croatia

A Mediterranean monk seal, a highly protected and rare species, has been sighted near Zadar in the Adriatic Sea. With only approximately 600 individuals remaining globally—primarily in Greece, Cyprus, North Africa, and Madeira—the appearance of this animal in Croatian waters is a significant event for local residents and scientists.

Researchers from the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries in Split suggest that the sighting is encouraging, as it indicates the Adriatic may still possess the necessary conditions for the species to survive, specifically regarding food availability. An analysis published in ‘Frontiers in Marine Science’ shows that most prey species essential to the seal's diet remain stable or show positive trends, though some areas face challenges from intensive coastal fishing and habitat degradation.

While scientists caution that these sightings are temporary visits rather than a permanent return of the population, they are monitoring the situation closely. Experts note that for a true return to occur, the species would require undisturbed coastal areas, suitable caves, and stable habitats for resting and breeding.
