Mediterranean Network for Hemoglobinopathies launched to improve regional care

The Mediterranean Network for Hemoglobinopathies (Mnfh) was officially launched in Rome on September 16. This independent, multidisciplinary international platform aims to improve the management of hemoglobinopathies, with a specific focus on thalassemia and sickle cell anemia.

The network brings together patient associations, healthcare professionals, researchers, and health policy experts. It initially includes participants from Italy, Greece, and Cyprus. The initiative seeks to foster knowledge exchange and structured collaboration to address the significant health challenges these diseases pose to the Mediterranean region.

Key priorities for the Mnfh include ensuring the adequacy, safety, and sustainability of blood supplies and reducing disparities in access to specialized care and therapeutic innovations. Annarita Patriarca, a member of the XII Commission of Social Affairs of the Chamber of Deputies, emphasized that international dialogue and strategic cooperation are essential to ensure that medical advancements and treatments are accessible to all, rather than being a privilege for a few.
