Mediterranean Power Grids Face Flexibility Crisis as Renewable Capacity Triples

The Mediterranean Transmission System Operators (Med‑TSO) released a report evaluating flexibility needs for the power systems of Morocco, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Jordan and Lebanon. It projects solar and wind capacity in these non‑EU countries to roughly triple between 2025 and 2030, with wind rising from 6 GW to 22 GW and solar from 8 GW to 23 GW.

The study warns that without rapid expansion of storage, stronger interconnections and cross‑border coordination, the region’s grids could encounter acute flexibility crises. It highlights each country's situation: Egypt’s large system will see wind capacity quadruple and solar more than double, raising extreme renewable penetration to 54 % by 2030; Jordan already operates with high solar penetration and may reach 88 % extreme penetration; Libya currently has near‑zero renewables, while Morocco, Tunisia and Lebanon are projected to generate more power than they can consume at certain hours.
