Mediterranean Sea climate data compiled into new Carimed database

Researchers from the Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO-CSIC), in collaboration with European and United States institutions, have developed Carimed, a new database tracking the Mediterranean Sea's transformation.

The database consolidates data from 46 oceanographic campaigns conducted between 1976 and 2018. By aggregating previously fragmented historical records and local archives, scientists can now compare measurements of temperature, oxygen, pH, carbon, and water mass age across four decades.

This long-term dataset aims to help researchers distinguish natural variability from persistent changes driven by the climate crisis. The Mediterranean is noted for its particular sensitivity to warming and other environmental disturbances.
