Mediterranean Sea reaches record temperatures due to climate change
The Mediterranean Sea reached record-breaking temperatures in 2026, with July averages hitting approximately 27°C. In early August, water temperatures near Mallorca were recorded at 33°C.
An analysis by World Weather Attribution (WWA) indicates that human-caused climate change contributed roughly 2°C of warming to the Mediterranean and 1.4°C to the seas surrounding Western Europe. These rising temperatures pose significant risks to marine life, fishing industries, tourism, and terrestrial weather patterns, including extreme rainfall.
Researchers utilized satellite data, ship observations, and climate models to compare current conditions against a hypothetical world without human-induced global warming. The findings suggest that such extreme heat events are becoming increasingly frequent due to anthropogenic climate change.
