Europe heatwaves cause over 32,000 excess deaths
Europe is facing a severe public health and environmental crisis due to extreme summer heatwaves and record-breaking ocean temperatures. Preliminary data from the EuroMomo surveillance platform estimates that over 32,000 excess deaths occurred across Europe between mid-July and mid-August. The most lethal periods included the last week of June, which saw nearly 16,000 excess deaths, and the first week of July, with approximately 8,000.
Germany has been particularly impacted, recording roughly 14,000 heat-related deaths by early August, its highest level since 2016. In France, heatwaves lasted for a total of 53 days in 2026, with July becoming the hottest month ever recorded in the country. Regional data from Spain shows that the Aragón community recorded 207 heat-attributable deaths since June, a significant increase compared to previous years.
Simultaneously, the Mediterranean Sea is experiencing unprecedented warming. The basin is heating up at twice the global ocean average rate, with surface temperatures frequently exceeding 28°C. This marine heatwave, characterized by persistent thermal anomalies, poses significant risks to biological ecosystems and can influence regional weather patterns. Experts note that the thermal inertia of the oceans allows this heat to persist longer than atmospheric heatwaves, potentially leading to warm sea temperatures lasting well into September.
