Mediterranean Sea warming fuels invasive fish, threatens coastal fisheries

Scientists say climate change driven by burning oil, coal and gas is heating the Mediterranean Sea, with projected temperature rises of 2 °C to 6 °C by 2100. The basin’s enclosed nature prevents heat dissipation, creating favourable conditions for invasive fish such as the spotted puffer fish, lionfish and rabbitfish. These species entered via the Suez Canal and are now moving toward the coasts of France and Spain.

The UN Food and Agriculture Organization’s General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean notes that invasive species have existed for decades but their spread accelerated after the early 2000s, matching the rise in sea temperature. Lionfish was first recorded in the eastern Mediterranean in 2012 and has rapidly expanded westward, displacing native stocks like the red mullet. Cyprus, closest to the canal, was the first country to feel the impact, with fishers reporting sharp declines in traditional catches.

Ernesto Azzuro, a marine biologist at Italy’s National Research Council Institute for Marine Biological Resources and Biotechnology, warned that “the Mediterranean of our grandfathers… is lost forever” and that continued warming could make large parts of the basin unsuitable for native species, threatening coastal livelihoods across the region.
