Mediterranean shark populations show critical decline, Shark Med study finds

An investigation by the Mallorca-based environmental organization Shark Med has revealed a critical decline in shark and ray populations in the Mediterranean Sea. Using non-invasive environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling techniques, researchers collected 80 valid samples over a one-year period within the Cabrera Marine Reserve.

The study found no traces of DNA from sharks or rays in any of the samples. This research was conducted at the Émile Baudot submarine mountain, an ecosystem reaching depths of 2,000 meters. Marine researcher and Shark Med founder Agustí Torres noted that the presence of these species appears to be 'practically nonexistent' in the sampled areas.

Experts warn that the disappearance of these apex predators could disrupt the trophic chain, leading to uncontrolled growth in prey species and the subsequent desertification of the seabed. Torres also highlighted that because these species are highly migratory, marine protected areas may be insufficient if the animals are not protected once they leave the designated zones.
