Water management entities launch resilience strategies for climate crisis
Water management entities and researchers are intensifying efforts to address water scarcity and climate change resilience, particularly in the Mediterranean region. Through the Share.medwater program, Enea is developing a sustainable management model that integrates alternative resources like rainwater and treated wastewater to reduce reliance on traditional sources.
In Italy, the federation Utilitalia has launched the ‘Pact for Water Resilience,’ a strategic initiative aimed at shifting water management from emergency response to prevention. Numerous companies, including Aset Spa, Viva Servizi, and BrianzAcque, have signed the pact to promote innovation, infrastructure upgrades, and digitalization. While digitalization of the Italian water service is accelerating—with significant increases in remote reading and centralized control systems—disparities remain between large operators and smaller regional entities.
Industry leaders, such as Acea’s Chief Transformation Officer Marco Pastorello, have highlighted the Mediterranean as a climate crisis hotspot. He noted a global infrastructure gap estimated at up to 6.5 trillion euros, emphasizing the need for both public and private investment to build resilience. Additionally, new technological approaches are emerging, such as a predictive platform developed by Aegir Resilience to anticipate water crises through hydro-strategic intelligence.
