Medjugorje sanctuary desecration: Polish suspect remains in custody

A court in Bosnia and Herzegovina has extended the detention of a Polish national, Bartłomiej K., for an additional two months, until at least October 27. The decision follows an incident in late July and early August at the Medjugorje sanctuary, where the suspect allegedly desecrated a statue of the Virgin Mary and set fire to the area near the altar of St. James Church.

Prosecutors argued that the attack was “carefully planned” and expressed concerns regarding the suspect's potential to flee the country or repeat the offense. While Bartłomiej K. has admitted to the acts, authorities noted he has shown no remorse. The charges include damaging sacred objects, inciting hatred on religious and national grounds, and creating a public threat.

Defense attorneys stated that the suspect's actions were motivated by ideological reasons rather than malice. They argued his intent was to draw attention to alleged fraud involving individuals associated with the Medjugorje apparitions, rather than to cause physical harm.
