New Zealand authorizes MDMA for severe PTSD treatment
New Zealand's drug regulator, Medsafe, has authorized two psychiatrists—Gary Wynn in Wellington and Tom Paterson in Auckland—to prescribe pharmaceutical-grade MDMA for the treatment of severe post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
This decision makes New Zealand the second country in the world to permit such clinical use, following Australia's authorization in 2023. The treatment is strictly regulated: it must be administered in a controlled clinical setting alongside psychotherapy, is restricted to patients aged 18 and older, and patients are not permitted to take the substance home.
Associate Health Minister David Seymour supported the move, noting that PTSD is difficult to treat and that MDMA could be highly effective through psychedelic-assisted therapy. This development follows a period of international debate, as the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) rejected the medical use of MDMA in 2024, citing insufficient evidence regarding its safety and efficacy.
