Medtronic receives FDA breakthrough status amid Class I product recall
Medtronic is experiencing contrasting regulatory developments. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has designated its drug-coated balloon, IN. PACT BTK, as a breakthrough device. To support this, the company plans a global randomized clinical study involving approximately 400 patients.
Conversely, the FDA has classified the recall of the Bravo CF capsule delivery system, produced by Medtronic and its subsidiary Given Imaging, as a Class I recall. This is the highest risk level, indicating that use of the esophageal pH monitoring device could lead to serious injury or death. As of August 10, 2026, 184 serious injuries have been reported in connection with the system, though no deaths have been recorded.
On the financial side, Piper Sandler has maintained a “Hold” rating on Medtronic with a price target of $85. The company's stock has faced pressure due to the exchange mechanics related to the spin-off of its MiniMed diabetes division and broader market fluctuations.
