The Greek Ministry of Health has deployed MedWatch, an artificial intelligence tool designed to monitor the digital presence of private healthcare providers and medical advertising. During its pilot phase in Attica, the system scanned over 8,500 facilities and nearly 10,000 pieces of digital content, identifying 231 entities with strong indications of potential violations.

The flagged entities include 50 medical practices, 12 private clinics, 7 polyclinics, and approximately 160 non-medical entities such as spas and hair salons. Specific findings include doctors acting as influencers through paid social media posts and patient testimonials, practitioners performing procedures without the required medical specialty, and facilities conducting invasive procedures that are typically restricted to hospital environments. The system also detected the use of undeclared medical devices, such as lasers, in advertisements.

MedWatch creator Giannis Doxaras explained that the platform scans digital environments four times daily, cross-referencing online advertisements on Google, Meta, and TikTok with official medical registries. While the findings are categorized as indicators rather than confirmed violations, the Athens Medical Association has begun inspections of the flagged practices to determine if regulatory breaches occurred.
