Meek Mill criticizes music streaming payout models
Philadelphia rapper Meek Mill has criticized the music industry's streaming model, arguing that current business decisions prioritize viral moments over talent and benefit digital service providers like Spotify and Apple Music more than the creators.
Mill specifically targeted the industry standard regarding streaming-equivalent album units. He described the rule equating 1,500 streams to a single sale as ‘insane,’ claiming the decision has set the music ecosystem back 10 years for both artists and consumers.
Having recently transitioned to an independent career after 13 years with a major label, Mill noted that his previous contract only provided 13% in royalties. He now maintains 100% ownership of his masters and publishing. He has used his platform to advise emerging artists to scrutinize their contracts and better understand the business aspects of the hip-hop industry.
