Meerut authorities begin demolition of illegal structures in Shastri Nagar

Authorities in Meerut have commenced a demolition drive at the Shastri Nagar Central Market to remove illegal constructions, following orders from the Supreme Court. The Awas Evam Vikas Parishad is leading the operation against 44 identified and sealed properties that were being used for commercial activities despite being residential.

To prevent protests and maintain order, heavy police presence and Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) forces have been deployed, with barricades set up to restrict movement in and around the market. While several buildings have already been demolished, the operation is expected to continue as the administration prepares to file a compliance report with the Supreme Court on September 21.

The enforcement action has caused significant local disruption. As a precautionary measure, electricity supply to the Central Market was disconnected, affecting multiple sectors including Sector 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, and 9. This power outage has subsequently impacted water supplies, causing difficulties for residents, students, and commuters in the surrounding areas.
