Meerut police officials accused of assaulting Samajwadi Party leaders

Two Samajwadi Party leaders, Dr. Digvijay Singh Bhati and Mohit Jatav, have alleged they were brutally assaulted by former Meerut Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Avinash Pandey and other police personnel. The incident reportedly occurred during a meeting at the SSP's office regarding a protest over the Lalita Gautam murder case.

Bhati alleged that Pandey kicked and punched him, causing a swollen eye and internal injuries. He further claimed that after being taken to the Special Operations Group (SOG) office, his hands and legs were tied, and he was subjected to further physical abuse. Jatav also reported being assaulted and held in custody for 12 hours. The leaders alleged they were humiliated by being forced to dance to music while incapacitated.

Following the allegations, Avinash Pandey was transferred from Meerut to the state police headquarters in Lucknow. The Meerut Police have taken cognizance of the claims of “rudeness and assault” and have ordered an inquiry. Abhishek Singh, the Deputy Inspector General of Police for the Saharanpur range, will lead the investigation.
