Climate expert Prof. Dr. Doğan Yaşar, a member of the Turkish Academy of Sciences (TÜBA) Climate Change Working Group, has issued a warning regarding the arrival of a ‘Mega El Niño’ event. This phenomenon is characterized by ocean surface temperature increases exceeding 2 degrees Celsius.

According to meteorological data, the probability of a Mega El Niño has risen to 90 percent. The last time such an event was recorded was in 1877. While the global impact is still being assessed, experts predict that Turkey and Europe will experience significant increases in precipitation and warmer winters.

Prof. Yaşar noted that while 2023 saw a ‘Super El Niño’ which increased precipitation in Turkey by 12 percent, the upcoming Mega El Niño could bring even more substantial changes to weather patterns. Despite these shifts, he indicated that Turkey is unlikely to face water scarcity issues until 2035 due to the expected rainfall.
