Megalodon tooth discovered inside a rock on New Jersey beach

A family from Pennsylvania discovered a rare megalodon tooth hidden inside a rock while shelling at a beach in Sea Isle City, New Jersey.

Mike Bowers noticed a small hole in a rock and called his son, Bo, to reach inside because the opening was too small for an adult hand. The discovery was later confirmed by a fossil expert from the Cape May Whale Watch and Research Center.

The megalodon is an extinct species of giant shark that lived between 23 and 3.6 million years ago. These prehistoric predators could grow to lengths of 50 to 80 feet and weigh up to 94 tons, making them the largest carnivorous sharks known to have existed.
