Megan Gallagher discusses themes of motherhood in ‘All Her Fault’

Showrunner Megan Gallagher discussed the thematic intentions behind the limited thriller series ‘All Her Fault’ during a recent screening. The series follows Marissa Irvine, played by Sarah Snook, and Jenny Kaminski, played by Dakota Fanning, who are connected by the disappearance of Marissa’s son, Milo.

Gallagher explained that she intentionally avoided using infidelity as a plot device to make the characters' husbands unlikable. Instead, the show explores how women and mothers often shoulder disproportionate societal responsibility and blame. Gallagher noted that the character of Jenny, while appearing to be a people-pleaser, possesses a ‘steely core’ that emerges when she reaches a breaking point in her marriage.

Additionally, the series examines the guilt faced by Marissa, an accomplished professional, highlighting that her career independence does not diminish her devotion to her child. Gallagher aimed to portray the complexities of marriage and the ways partners can fail one another without resorting to traditional tropes like extramarital affairs.
