MegCell Pulse robotic system plays acoustic guitars

A New Zealand-based engineer named Bruce has developed the MegCell Pulse, a 3D-printable robotic system designed to play acoustic guitars. Developed over approximately six to seven years, the device mounts directly onto a standard acoustic guitar to translate digital tablature into physical music.

The system functions through two coordinated mechanical assemblies that mimic human hands. One component handles fretting by pressing strings against the neck, while a second component near the sound hole uses six individual plectrums to pluck the strings. Unlike digital music software or speakers, the MegCell Pulse relies on the actual instrument to produce sound, preserving the natural resonance and acoustic properties of the wooden guitar.

The majority of the device can be produced using a standard 3D printer, with other components being easily sourced. The software translates digital notation into precise timing signals for the actuators, allowing the robot to play various songs without requiring custom programming for each piece.
