Meggen municipality plans use for 26.9 million franc budget surplus

The Swiss municipality of Meggen, home to approximately 7,800 residents, is facing an unusual budgetary situation after concluding 2025 with a surplus of 26.9 million Swiss francs. Located on the shores of Lake Lucerne, Meggen is one of Switzerland’s wealthiest communities, with more than half of its households reporting annual incomes exceeding 300,000 francs.

Local politicians have formulated a ten-point plan to utilize the excess funds for community benefits. Key proposals include reducing local taxes and investing in public infrastructure, such as planting trees to provide shade during heatwaves and installing new drinking water fountains.

Other planned expenditures focus on social services and amenities, including increasing support for families, students, and the elderly. Specific suggestions involve extending the operating hours of the indoor pool during winter, improving access to the lakefront, and providing more public seating. The municipality is also considering making library services more accessible through expanded free usage for certain groups.
