Meghalaya Chief Secretary calls for total coverage in Census 2027
Meghalaya Chief Secretary Dr. Shakil P. Ahammed has emphasized the necessity of comprehensive population data for the upcoming Census 2027 to ensure inclusive development. Speaking at a state-level training conference for Principal Census Officers, Ahammed warned that inaccurate data or gaps in coverage could undermine resource allocation and leave vulnerable communities, particularly in remote rural and tribal areas, excluded from government welfare schemes.
The Chief Secretary noted that reliable demographic and socio-economic data is essential for identifying gaps in healthcare, education, social welfare, road connectivity, and digital infrastructure. Such data is also expected to support the state’s development vision for 2032 and its economic goal of building a $10-billion to $16-billion economy by providing insights into market potential and youth capabilities.
Officials also highlighted the role of technology in the digital census to enhance accuracy and security. The Office of the Registrar General of India (ORGI) and state personnel have already completed the House Listing and Housing Census phase, preparing the groundwork for the Phase-II Population Enumeration.
