Meghalaya CM addresses petrol bomb attack and UCC debate

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma visited the Directorate of Mineral Resources (DMR) office in Shillong following a petrol bomb attack on Wednesday. Three unidentified individuals reportedly hurled two petrol bombs at the premises, damaging a department officer's vehicle. No casualties were reported. Sangma has directed authorities to strengthen security and install additional high-definition CCTV cameras at the site. This incident is part of a series of arson attacks reported in Shillong since August.

Separately, Chief Minister Sangma addressed the potential implementation of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Meghalaya. Responding to a roadmap proposed by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Sangma stated that the state must first decide if it wants a UCC and what state-specific framework would be appropriate. He noted that any such code would need to respect the state’s predominantly tribal character and matrilineal social system. Sangma emphasized that the government must consult stakeholders, political parties, and local communities before making any decisions regarding personal laws such as marriage, divorce, and inheritance.
