Meghalaya government launches new youth, health, and education initiatives

The Meghalaya state government is implementing several new initiatives focused on healthcare, youth development, and education. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma recently addressed the state’s maternal healthcare system following an infant death in West Khasi Hills. While acknowledging infrastructure gaps, Sangma highlighted that state programs, including the Mother App and safe motherhood transit homes, have contributed to a 57 percent reduction in maternal mortality over the last several years.

In a push for human capital, the state has significantly increased its sports and youth budget from approximately Rs 40 crore to over Rs 840 crore. The 2nd State-Level Chief Minister’s Youth Engagement Programme was launched to support thousands of youths across 56 blocks, with provisions for international travel assistance. Additionally, the government launched the Chief Minister’s Leadership in Education & Development (CMLEAD) Fellowship to improve educational standards across the state’s 12 districts.

Infrastructure and economic development also remain priorities. The Chief Minister inaugurated the Meghalayan Age Pavilion in Shillong, a Rs 11.52 crore project designed to showcase local products and support entrepreneurship as part of a broader creative redevelopment plan for the city. Furthermore, the state is promoting its Early Childhood Development Mission, emphasizing the importance of the first 1,000 days of a child's life to ensure long-term development.
