Meghalaya Congress calls for gender-based nursing recruitment ratios at NEIGRIHMS

The Meghalaya Pradesh Youth Congress (MPYC) has urged the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) to implement an 80:20 female-to-male nursing recruitment ratio. The group argues that increased female staffing is essential for patient dignity and comfort, particularly in sensitive departments such as maternity wards, labor rooms, and pediatric intensive care units.

MPYC leaders noted that recent recruitment trends at the institute showed a significant imbalance, claiming approximately 90% of recent hires were male. They have requested that NEIGRIHMS adopt recruitment norms similar to those used by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). Additionally, the group raised concerns regarding regional representation, noting that a high number of recent recruits were from Rajasthan rather than Meghalaya.

Local representatives intend to escalate the matter to Union Health Minister JP Nadda.
