Meghalaya delegation identifies three WWI Garo graves in Malta

A Meghalaya delegation, led by Assembly Speaker Thomas A Sangma, has identified the graves of three additional Garo men at the Pieta Military Cemetery in Malta. These men served with the British 69th Garo Labour Company during World War I.

Prior to this discovery, Khew Marak, who died on June 15, 1918, was the only known Garo member of the 69th Garo Labour Company buried at the cemetery. The newly identified individuals include Ading Marak and Join Marak, both of whom died on June 10, 1918, and Sangjim Sangma, who died on June 19, 1918.

The 69th Garo Labour Company was a unit recruited from the region to support the Allied war effort through tasks such as road construction, maintenance, and the transportation of supplies. The delegation's visit to Malta followed their participation in the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association Conference in South Africa.
