Meghalaya extends voter list revision deadline following unrest

Meghalaya’s Chief Electoral Officer, BDR Tiwari, has extended the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process by 14 days. The extension, which moves the deadline for filing claims and objections to September 18, follows disruptions caused by recent unrest and a Khasi Students’ Union rally in Shillong.

To date, 129,298 SIR hearings have been conducted, representing approximately 19.84 percent of generated notices. So far, 297 electors have been found ineligible following the verification process. Officials noted that many notices were issued due to record mismatches, such as discrepancies in names, unusual age gaps between parents and children, or inconsistencies in ECINET mapping.

The CEO emphasized that no names will be removed from the draft roll without due process, including proper notice, individual inquiry, and a reasoned speaking order. Hearings are expected to continue until October 17, with the final electoral roll scheduled for publication on October 21.
