Meghalaya government approves land lease for NorthEast United FC academy

The Meghalaya cabinet has approved a 45-year lease of approximately 20 acres of land at Mawkhanu in New Shillong to the Indian Super League club NorthEast United FC. The club plans to invest between Rs 40-50 crore to establish a football academy featuring three football grounds, accommodation facilities, and other sports infrastructure.

Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Wailadmiki Shylla stated that the academy aims to bridge the gap between grassroots football and professional training, allowing local players to compete at international levels. The project complements existing state initiatives, such as the Mission Football programme and the establishment of nearly 125 grassroots football centres across the state.

The decision follows discussions regarding the club's interest in moving its management from Guwahati to Shillong. While the club initially sought a 60-year lease, the government settled on a 45-year term.
