Meghalaya High Court Orders Feasibility Study for Independent Forensic Lab and Updated Drug Case Data

The Meghalaya High Court directed the Directorate of Central Forensic Science Services and the Directorate of Forensic Science Laboratory, Meghalaya, to examine the feasibility of establishing an independent forensic science laboratory in the state. The bench, led by Chief Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Justice W. Diengdoh, emphasized the need for timely forensic reports in criminal proceedings.

In a related proceeding, the court instructed the state government to submit refreshed figures on cases filed under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act in Shillong, focusing on the Police Bazar market area. The government must file an additional affidavit with updated NDPS case data covering the period from January 2025 to the present, addressing concerns about ongoing drug trafficking.

Both orders stem from public‑interest litigations aimed at strengthening investigative and law‑enforcement capacities in Meghalaya.
