Meghalaya implements merit-based MBBS seat allocation
Meghalaya Health Minister Wailadmiki Shylla has stated that MBBS seat allotments in the state are now being conducted strictly based on merit following the implementation of new Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
The new SOPs were introduced to address previous complaints where students with lower marks allegedly received preferred college placements over higher-scoring candidates. The decision follows an incident involving a NEET qualifier who surrendered his seat, alleging unfair treatment during the initial counseling process. The student claimed that despite his high score, he was assigned his fourth preference while lower-scoring students were admitted to preferred institutions.
In response to concerns raised by students and parents, the health department conducted a second round of counseling. The revised process is designed to allow eligible students to select colleges based on their merit ranking through a rotational system.
