Meghalaya child death sparks outcry over poor road connectivity
The death of a three-year-old child in Domkyrkoh village has sparked significant controversy regarding road infrastructure and healthcare access in Meghalaya. The child, Habankyrshan Marbaniang, died while being carried on foot for approximately 90 minutes toward a medical facility after her parents were unable to secure vehicle transport due to extremely poor road conditions.
Health Minister Wailadmiki Shylla attributed the tragedy to connectivity issues rather than a failure of health services, stating that the department was unaware of the situation as the family had not contacted health officials or ASHA workers. The minister noted that while the government is working on improvements, such as proposing four-wheel-drive ambulances, remote areas still face significant challenges.
Political leaders have criticized the government's response. VPP president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit argued that the incident highlights a failure to prioritize urgent infrastructure needs, suggesting that the government must focus on areas where road access is a matter of life and death. The incident has intensified calls for the state to address the gap between reported development and the reality faced by rural populations.
