Meghalaya launches narcotics hub and expands preventive detention of traffickers

The Meghalaya government announced the creation of a Narcotics Administrative Building at Ratacherra, a major entry point from Assam and Manipur, to strengthen surveillance of cross‑border drug movement. The facility is part of the Drug Reduction, Elimination and Action Mission (DREAM) and will be equipped with a specialised scanning vehicle and a dedicated K‑9 unit.

Adviser to the Social Welfare Department Paul Lyngdoh said the state will place ten additional suspected traffickers under preventive detention pursuant to the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT NDPS) Act within two months, while extending detention for repeat offenders. The announcement was made during the Pulse of the Hills anti‑drug awareness campaign, which was attended by actor John Abraham and fitness influencer Dapalei Linna Warjri.
