Meghalaya launches statewide HIV and STI awareness campaign

The Meghalaya government is launching the ‘Intensified IEC Campaign 3.0’ to strengthen its fight against HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The two-month statewide initiative focuses on youth engagement, early testing, treatment, and reducing the social stigma associated with the disease.

The campaign was inaugurated at Lady Keane College in conjunction with International Youth Day, with Health and Family Welfare Minister Vailadmicie Shylla attending as the chief guest. This move comes in response to a rising HIV burden in the state; data from the Meghalaya AIDS Control Society indicated that over 10,000 people, including approximately 500 children, had been identified with HIV/AIDS as of November 2025. Officials noted that HIV prevalence among adults in Meghalaya is significantly higher than the national average, with East Jaintia Hills emerging as a major area of concern.

To reach diverse groups—including students, pregnant women, healthcare workers, and community leaders—the campaign will utilize rallies, roadshows, village meetings, and digital platforms. Outreach efforts will also incorporate community radio, folk performances, and flash mobs to make information regarding safe sexual behavior and the link between substance abuse and HIV transmission more accessible.
