Meghalaya leaders push indigenous rights agenda and expand party reach

The National People's Party (NPP) held its National Committee Meeting and Annual General Meeting in Shillong, adopting resolutions to strengthen democratic participation, protect indigenous rights, promote peace in the Northeast and expand the party’s presence beyond the region. Key measures include a transparent framework for the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, increased youth and women leadership, inter‑state cooperation, and preparation for upcoming Lok Sabha and state elections.

New Khasi Student Union (KSU) president Raymond P Kharjana pledged to continue the union’s fight for the Inner Line Permit, indigenous land protection and opposition to uranium mining and unchecked railway expansion. He highlighted the need for a comprehensive land protection law, education reforms, action against drug abuse, resolution of the Assam‑Meghalaya boundary dispute, and recognition of the Khasi language in the Constitution’s Eighth Schedule.
