Meghalaya Minister defends voter list revision to exclude illegal immigrants

Meghalaya Cabinet Minister Sunbor Shullai has defended the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process, stating it is essential to prevent illegal immigrants and ineligible individuals from exercising voting rights.

Addressing criticisms from the Congress party and the INDIA bloc, Shullai accused the opposition of spreading misinformation regarding the Election Commission of India (ECI). He noted that a joint press note issued following a full meeting of the Commission has refuted allegations of internal disagreements among Election Commissioners.

Official records indicate that the SIR has involved door-to-door verification for 2,349,645 voters. The process is currently in the notice and hearing stage, with the final voter list expected to be published in October.
