Meghalaya minority forum seeks legal action over Shillong vandalism

The Meghalaya Linguistic Minority Development Forum (MLMDF) has called for legal and administrative action following recent incidents of vandalism, intimidation, and the desecration of national icons in Shillong. The forum specifically highlighted the desecration of busts of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and Swami Vivekananda in R. R. Colony.

In response to the unrest, the MLMDF has filed a letter petition with the High Court of Meghalaya seeking stricter standard operating procedures (SOPs) for public rallies. Proposed measures include prohibiting masks during demonstrations, impounding unregistered vehicles, and utilizing drone surveillance. The group also expressed concern that masked individuals on unregistered two-wheelers have been able to bypass security checkpoints, leading to mob violence that affects residents, tourists, and commuters.

The forum has submitted representations to the Governor, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, and the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills. They are demanding a time-bound investigation led by a senior officer, the ceremonial restoration of the desecrated busts, and a request that public rallies be rerouted away from densely populated, multi-community residential areas to prevent fear and public harassment.
