Meghalaya Student Union Threatens Self‑Enforcement of ILP and MRSSA

The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) met with Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma to present a 20‑point charter demanding the immediate implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) and the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA). The union warned it would devise its own mechanisms to protect indigenous interests if the state government does not enforce these laws.

KSU President Raymond Kharjana said the ILP proposal remains pending with the central government, while the MRSSA’s entry‑exit checkpoints have not been set up despite the act being eight years old. The union also opposed proposals to convert MRSSA facilitation centres into food courts and urged stronger verification under the 2020 Migrant Workers Act. The chief minister reiterated that the matters are pending with the Centre but promised continued pressure from the state government.

If the government fails to act, KSU indicated it would enforce the laws independently, emphasizing its resolve to safeguard the rights and identity of the indigenous community.
