Meghalaya to launch state-run travel aggregator and tourism facilities

The Meghalaya cabinet has approved the formation of the Meghalaya Integrated Transport Society (MITS) to develop a unified online platform for booking buses, taxis, and helicopters, as well as other tourism services. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma stated the platform aims to provide a single application for transport services while maintaining lower technology charges than existing providers to ensure operators retain more earnings. The government plans to support the agency for two years before determining a permanent revenue model. The service will be optional for transport operators.

Additionally, Tourism Minister Timothy D. Shira addressed concerns regarding the Umling Facilitation Centre in the Ri-Bhoi district. Expected to be operational by November or early December, the centre is intended to facilitate and guide tourists rather than cause delays. The government also plans to make local tourist guides mandatory for visitors to enhance safety and prevent criminal incidents. The state is also establishing a dedicated civil aviation wing within the Transport Department to support the expansion of Shillong Airport at Umroi.
