Prince Harry and celebrity claimants face up to £45 million in Daily Mail legal costs
A High Court hearing in London on 29 July 2026 began to determine the legal‑cost liability of Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, and six other high‑profile claimants after their privacy case against Associated Newspapers Limited (ANL), publisher of the Daily Mail, was dismissed. The judge rejected all 97 claims, finding no evidence of unlawful information gathering.
ANL reported that the litigation cost the publisher about £34.5 million (≈ $45 million). The claimants’ after‑the‑event insurance policies cover roughly £16‑18 million, leaving a shortfall of more than £18 million. ANL is seeking an interim payment of around £10 million and has applied for costs on an indemnity basis, which would require the claimants to pay the full legal bill. The claimants have offered an interim payment of about £8 million, which ANL described as generous but insufficient.
The group of claimants includes Prince Harry, Sir Elton John, Baroness Doreen Lawrence, Elizabeth Hurley, Sadie Frost, David Furnish and former MP Sir Simon Hughes. Their legal defeat and the ensuing cost battle are expected to generate significant media attention and could result in each claimant bearing roughly £2.6 million out of pocket if the full sum is awarded.
